For many, Skype was the go-to app for video calls and instant messaging. It set the standard for online communication, revolutionizing how businesses, friends, and families connected across the globe. But in 2025, is Skype still relevant, or has it stepped aside?
A Legacy of Innovation, But a Struggle to Keep Up
Microsoft’s Skype did have its day, especially during the early 2010s when video calling was still a novelty. It was one name that people knew by—used in offices, schools, and even by regular users. The arrival of its rivals, though, like Zoom, Microsoft Teams (ironically owned by Microsoft), and WhatsApp Video, significantly impacted Skype’s popularity.
One of Skype’s biggest problems was its transition to a cloud-based architecture, and this caused performance issues and usability issues. Users began abandoning it in favor of smoother alternatives and fewer technical humps.
Where Skype Stands Today

In the real world, Skype’s heyday is over. Microsoft only cares about Teams these days, and Skype hangs on for reasons of loyalty more than a passion for innovation. Unless something catastrophic occurs to flip it over or rebrand it, it will just fall further and further into the background.
All that aside, for those who remember its peak, Skype still stands as a testament to how far digital communication has come. It’s a reminder of times when video calls sounded like something out of the future and speaking with loved ones halfway around the world was mind-blowing.
